(Relaxnews) - Take another look at the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. If it looks a little less crooked, that’s because the iconic landmark has, indeed, straightened out -- ever so slightly.
According to a newly released annual report prepared by a team of Pisa monitors, between 2001 and 2013 the tower recovered 2.5 cm of its vertical incline.
And while that might disappoint the throngs of tourists who pitstop in Pisa specifically to see the crooked tower, scientists note that the fact the tower has gradually straightened out means the landmark is stable and will be able to continue welcoming tourists for generations to come.
Rehabilitation measures to stabilize the tilting tower over the years have included the reinforcement of the base and the use of steel rods for support.
What does that mean for tourists? Simply that they'll need to adjust their own vertical incline when snapping the signature “I’m holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa” photo.
